Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses the prevalence and risks of alcohol use during pregnancy, management of acute withdrawal, and evidence-based treatment strategies for alcohol use disorder in the perinatal period.
This session will highlight the intersection of two important topics: management of alcohol use disorder (especially medications for alcohol use disorder) and the treatment of substance use disorders in pregnancy. The session will combine focused didactic content and case-based learning to educate attendees about the current recommendations for addressing alcohol use disorder in pregnancy.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Values and Ethics.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Review the incidence and prevalence of alcohol use during pregnancy, and the maternal and fetal complications associated with alcohol dependence and use disorder in the perinatal period.
- Develop strategies for the safe and effective management of acute alcohol withdrawal in pregnant individuals, incorporating current best practices and evidence-based approaches.
- Evaluate the existing evidence on the safety and efficacy of medications for MAUD during pregnancy, considering the balance between potential fetal risks and maternal treatment benefits, including risks of forgoing medications.

Brent Schnipke, MD

Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine
Brent Schnipke, MD is a PGY-4 in Psychiatry at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. He graduated medical school in 2018 from Wright State University. He currently serves the Administrative Chief Resident for the residency program and has been a recipient of the Ginsberg Fellowship from AADPRT. His academic interests include psychiatric education and medical humanities. His clinical interests include consultation-liaison psychiatry, psychotherapy, and addiction psychiatry. He is pursuing fellowship in CL psychiatry at Northwestern following residency.
Gayane Archer, MD

Dr. Gayane “Gaya” Archer is a third-year psychiatry resident at Northwestern University, where she is enrolled in both the Clinician Educator and Bioethics tracks. She earned her medical degree from Rush Medical College with a concentration in Health Equity and Social Justice Leadership, where she founded a street medicine program and an outreach initiative for youth at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center. In residency, Dr. Archer focuses on substance use disorder education and has developed an innovative opioid use disorder curriculum at the Feinberg School of Medicine. She is also active in the hospital’s Interdisciplinary Learning Network for Substance Use and Health Improvement Team (INSITE) and serves as a curriculum reviewer for the National Collaborative for Education to Address the Social Determinants of Health (NCEAS). Her contributions to medical education have been recognized through her induction into the Feinberg Academy of Medical Educators and by receiving the George Ginsberg Fellowship from the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training (AADPRT). Driven by a commitment to advocacy through education, Dr. Archer aims to inspire future healthcare providers to deliver compassionate, equitable care through a career in academic psychiatry.
Kakra Boye-Doe, MD
PGY-3 Psychiatry
Northwestern University / McGaw Medical Center
Kakra Boye-Doe, MD is a third year resident in psychiatry at Northwestern university (McGaw Medical Center). He was selected as one of 19 scholars to participate in a year-long research fellowship (REACH) aimed at recognizing and eliminating disparities in addiction through culturally informed care. Through his time as a fellow he conducted literature review on relationship between substance use disorder and ADHD, specifically looking to see if early treatment of ADHD can decrease risk of later development of substance use disorder. He hopes to continue to combine his interest in child and adolescent psychiatry and addiction.
Faith Horbatch, MD

Northwestern University
Dr. Faith Horbatch is a second-year psychiatry resident at Northwestern University. She obtained undergraduate and medical degrees from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Throughout her training, areas of research include identifying accessible treatment modalities for individuals suffering from psychiatric illness across the lifespan, including a camp-based intervention for pediatric anxiety and a text-message based system for peripartum mood disorders. In residency, her clinical interests include adult populations with critical psychiatric illness in the acute, hospital setting. After residency, she hopes to continue a career in academic psychiatry, where she may work with learners, researchers, and interdisciplinary teams to deliver comprehensive, evidence-based, and accessible psychiatric care.

PAs
ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1.25 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria.
