Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses the history and efficacy of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in treating AUD, dispelling common myths, and bridging the gap between clinical practice and self-help approaches, aiming to enhance providers' confidence in recommending AA as part of a holistic treatment plan, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes and broader recovery success.
The session "Maximizing AA Referrals: Understanding the History and Power of Self-Help Meetings" provides healthcare professionals with strategies to effectively refer patients to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and other mutual support groups. Through a blend of lectures and interactive group activities, participants will explore AA's history, benefits, and principles while learning to address common barriers to referrals. The session emphasizes culturally sensitive, patient-centered approaches to promote equitable access to recovery resources, improving addiction treatment outcomes.
The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement.
This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Interprofessional Communication.
Learning Objectives
- By the end of the session, participants will be able to articulate the key principles of AA, including the 12 steps and the role of anonymity, demonstrating understanding through interactive discussions and case studies.
- Participants will practice and demonstrate effective referral strategies by working through case studies in small groups, focusing on overcoming barriers such as patient resistance, stigma, and cultural differences.
- Participants will be able to explain how involvement in AA contributes to long-term abstinence and improved well-being by reviewing research findings and discussing them in relation to patient care scenarios.

- Click the button Claim Medical Credits in the box titled Claim Credits & Certificate. Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM eLearning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.
- For Pharmacists ONLY: Complete the task entitled "Enter Pharmacist CPE Monitor Information (Pharmacists Only)". Sherry Nykiel, MD, MPH

Dr. Sherry Nykiel is psychiatrist specializing in general and addiction psychiatry in Media, PA and is the founder and CEO of Justus Mental Health, a psychiatric services organization providing education, consultation and clinical services. She received her medical degree from University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, completed the Massachusetts General/McLean Hospitals/Harvard School of Medicine Adult Psychiatry Residency and the Massachusetts General Brigham/Harvard School of Medicine Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. Her clinical expertise includes the treatment of co-occurring borderline personality disorders and substance use disorders, trauma-related syndromes and opioid use disorders including the use of buprenorphine. She has extensive administrative and program development expertise having served as the Medical Director of McLean Fernside, Boston Medical Center Outpatient Psychiatry, Boston Public Health Commission Behavioral Health Services, First Steps Treatment Center at Crozer Keystone, Chief of Addiction Psychiatry for Key Recovery Outpatient and as the Chief of Addiction Psychiatry and Medical Director of the Delaware Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services. In addition to her private practice, she also currently serves as the Chief Behavioral Health Officer for the Delaware Division of Medicaid and Medical Assistance.

Dr. Vaibhav Vyas is a compassionate and dedicated psychiatrist, currently specializing in Addiction Psychiatry through a fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He began his medical journey at Xavier University School of Medicine in Aruba and completed his psychiatry residency at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center in New Jersey, where he served as Chief Resident. His diverse clinical training has equipped him with expertise in general psychiatry, addiction treatment, and interventional psychiatry, allowing him to provide comprehensive and innovative care to his patients.
Before pursuing psychiatry, Dr. Vyas gained valuable experience in healthcare administration, serving as the Director of Case Management and Social Work at Hudson Regional Hospital, NJ. In addition to his clinical work, he is passionate about research, having contributed to peer-reviewed publications and presented at major conferences, including the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. Dr. Vyas is also deeply committed to education and passionate about mentoring the next generation of medical professionals and researchers, fostering a strong network of future leaders in addiction psychiatry. Outside of my professional pursuits, I enjoy traveling the world and playing cricket.

Dr. Stanley Nkemjika, MD, MPH, is a dedicated physician and public health professional with a strong academic foundation and a passion for advancing mental health care. He earned his medical degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and a Master of Public Health from Rutgers University, New Jersey. Currently, Dr. Nkemjika is an addiction psychiatry fellow at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where he focuses on the intersection of addiction, psychiatry, and public health. His professional interests encompass psychiatry, addiction medicine, public health, epidemiology, social determinants of health, and health equity. With a deep commitment to addressing addiction psychiatry and addiction epidemiology, Dr. Nkemjika’s work contributes significantly to the broader understanding of these fields, particularly in the context of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.
Dr. Nkemjika’s notable accomplishments include contributing to evidence-based medicine through peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. His scholarly work reflects his dedication to advancing knowledge and improving clinical practices. Beyond his academic pursuits, he is passionate about mentoring the next generation of medical and public health professionals, including young researchers and medical students.
