Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses current research priorities in addiction medicine, emerging areas for future funding, and the value of collaboration between scientific and clinical communities to enhance care and health equity.
The "Bridging the Gap" listening session will provide an opportunity for addiction medicine clinical specialists, researchers, and representatives from scientific research agencies to discuss emerging trends and ways to improve alignment between research and clinical practice needs. Clinical specialists' input on urgent clinical practice priorities will help inform research agencies' efforts to make funding initiatives more responsive to everyday practice. The session will also provide updates on addiction research funding initiatives and promote collaborative research-practice partnerships.

The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives
- Upon completion, participants will be able to list at least three current areas of scientific focus from research funding agencies.
- Upon completion, participants will be able to describe at least three emergent areas within addiction medicine that clinical specialists recommend for future scientific funding initiatives.
- Upon completion, participants will be able to explain the importance of bidirectional communication between science and clinical practice communities, and its potential to improve quality of care and promote health equity.

- Click Complete Evaluation to provide valuable activity feedback. Scroll down on all questions as there may be answer options that expand past the size of the window.
- Click the button Claim Medical Credits in the box titled Claim Credits & Certificate. Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM eLearning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.
- For Pharmacists ONLY: Complete the task entitled "Enter Pharmacist CPE Monitor Information (Pharmacists Only)". Wilson Compton
MD, MPE
Wilson M. Compton, MD, MPE serves as the Deputy Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) of the National Institutes of Health. In his current role, Dr. Compton's responsibilities include providing scientific leadership in the development, implementation, and management of NIDA's research portfolio and working with the Director to support and conduct research to improve the prevention and treatment of drug abuse and addiction. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Compton served as the Director of NIDA's Division of Epidemiology, Services and Prevention Research from 2002 until 2013. In this leadership role, he oversaw the scientific direction of a complex public health research program of national and international scope addressing: 1) the extent and spread of drug abuse, 2) how to prevention drug abuse, and 3) how to implement drug abuse prevention and treatment services as effectively as possible. Before joining NIDA, Dr. Compton was Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Master in Psychiatric Epidemiology Program at Washington University in Saint Louis as well as Medical Director of Addiction Services at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis. Dr. Compton received his undergraduate education from Amherst College. He attended medical school and completed his residency training in psychiatry at Washington University. During his career, Dr. Compton has achieved multiple scientific accomplishments: he was selected to serve as a member of the DSM-5 Revision Task Force; is the author of more than 130 articles and chapters; and is an invited speaker at multiple high-impact venues. Dr. Compton is the recipient of multiple awards and in 2008, he received the Senior Scholar Health Services Research Award from the American Psychiatric Association, in 2010 the Paul Hoch Award from the American Psychopathological Association, in both 2012 and 2013, he was selected to receive the Leveraging Collaboration Award from the Food and Drug Administration. In 2013, Dr. Compton received the prestigious Health and Human Services Secretary's Award for Meritorious Service.

Geetha A. Subramaniam
MD, DFAPA, DFAACAP
Geetha A. Subramaniam, MD, DFAPA, DFAACAP is the Deputy Director of the Center for Clinical Trials Network, at NIDA. In this role, she has been instrumental in developing research projects in a variety of topic areas, including addressing the prevention of substance abuse in adolescents, prevention and intervention of prescription stimulant misuse in youth. Previously, she was a full-time faculty member in the Division of Child Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Associate Medical Director of Mountain Manor Treatment Center, Baltimore, MD, where she led clinical trials with adolescents with SUD and served as a preceptor to residents and fellows. She distinguished herself as a clinical and research expert in the assessment and treatment of adolescents and young adults with opioid use disorders. She is ABPN certified in General, Child, and Adolescent, and Addiction Psychiatry and a Distinguished Fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Ken Freedman, M.D., MS, MBA, FACP, DFASAM, AGAF
Dr. Freedman has been a dedicated ASAM member and officer for the past 24 years. Currently he serves as Treasurer and Quality Improvement Council Chair. He also works as a Medical Director for CVS Health and Medical Director at The Recovery Research Network. Previous leadership roles have included MA Public Health Hospitals’ system quality chief, public health hospital CMO (Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Boston), director of two outpatient MAT programs, Clinical Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He maintains board-certifications in addiction medicine, internal medicine and gastroenterology. Ken teaches clinicians on the medically appropriate and humane treatment of pain disorders. His professional commitment is to facilitate health care delivery toward the integration of medical care and substance use disorders in respectful and innovative ways.
Ken earned a B.S. from M.I.T. (1983), M.S. from Stanford (1984), M.D. from Tel Aviv University (1989), M.B.A. from University of Hartford (2004). He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Albany Medical Center Hospital and a fellowship in Gastroenterology at University of Connecticut Health Sciences Center.

The American Society of Addiction Medicine designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

PAs
ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1.25 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1.25 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 05/06/2028. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
Pharmacists
