Benzodiazepine Tapering Webinar Series

Based on the Joint Clinical Practice Guideline on Benzodiazepine Tapering

Overview

Elevate your skills and expertise in Benzodiazepine Tapering with our webinar series, based on Joint Clinical Practice Guideline on Benzodiazepine Tapering. Participants will learn how to determine when the risks of continued Benzodiazepine prescribing outweigh the benefits for a given patient, and how to safely taper the medication when indicated in various settings.

This webinar series will equip clinicians with the knowledge and tools to implement evidence-based benzodiazepine tapering strategies across diverse patient populations and practice settings. Participants will develop a strong understanding of key principles, including risk-benefit assessments, close monitoring and adjustments, and individualized tapering plans.

By the end of the series, participants will be better equipped to navigate the complexities of benzodiazepine tapering, optimize patient safety, and reduce the risk of adverse outcomes. Through expert-led discussions and case-based applications, this series will translate clinical guidelines into actionable strategies for safer benzodiazepine tapering.

The target audience for this Introductory level webinar includes physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, researchers, and students.

Webinar Series Topics

  • Considerations for Benzodiazepine Tapering
  • Benzodiazepine Tapering for Older Adults
  • Considerations for Tapering Benzodiazepines in Primary Care
  • Addressing Benzodiazepine Tapering Challenges

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Utilize the Joint Clinical Practice Guideline on Benzodiazepine Tapering to implement evidence-based tapering strategies, conduct risk-benefit assessments, and adjust tapers based on individualized patient responses to treatment.
  2. Implement strategies for safely tapering benzodiazepines in older adults by addressing their unique risks, identifying appropriate care settings, and fostering shared decision-making.
  3. Enhance the role of primary care providers in benzodiazepine tapering by identifying appropriate patients, employing evidence-based strategies, and addressing common barriers in primary care settings.
  4. Implement evidence-based strategies to manage complex cases involving benzodiazepines by mitigating risks, managing withdrawal symptoms, and responding to patient-specific challenges such as polysubstance use, illicit sourcing, and co-occurring conditions.
  5. Employ a collaborative, patient-centered approach to actively engage patients in care decisions, fostering shared decision-making and individualized care.
  6. Differentiate between benzodiazepine physical dependence and benzodiazepine use disorder and apply patient-centered strategies when developing individualized care plans in collaboration with the patient.

      Addressing Benzodiazepine Tapering Challenges

      Monday, June 2, 2025

      12:00 pm - 1:00 pm ET

This case-based webinar will provide healthcare professionals with essential tools and knowledge to manage benzodiazepine tapers in complex cases, including those involving opioid use disorder (OUD), illicit benzodiazepine use, co-prescribing, and protracted withdrawal. Participants will learn how to navigate challenging clinical scenarios, including cases where providers may be hesitant to continue benzodiazepine prescriptions, approaches to addressing illicit benzodiazepine use, and strategies for tapering patients maintained on buprenorphine or methadone. The webinar will also cover effective patient communication techniques, including individualized messaging and best practices for referring patients to specialists when necessary. Participants will explore evidence-based strategies for managing withdrawal symptoms, mitigating risks, and developing personalized tapering plans that consider polysubstance use, non-prescribed benzodiazepine use, and barriers to care. By the end of this webinar, participants will be better prepared to address the challenges of benzodiazepine tapering in complex clinical scenarios.

The target audience for this Introductory level webinar includes physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, researchers, and students.

      Webinar Series Topics

      • Considerations for Benzodiazepine Tapering
      •  Benzodiazepine Tapering for Older Adults
      • Considerations for Tapering Benzodiazepines in Primary Care
      • Addressing Benzodiazepine Tapering Challenges

This webinar series addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning, and Improvement.

      Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

      1. Apply evidence-based strategies to manage withdrawal symptoms and mitigate risks associated with benzodiazepine tapers.
      2. Analyze the risks associated with tapering benzodiazepines in complex patients, including those with benzodiazepine use disorder, severe protracted withdrawal, non-prescribed benzodiazepine use, and concurrent opioid use or co-prescription, to inform individualized care plans.
      3. Develop individualized tapering plans that address patient-specific challenges, including polysubstance use, illicit benzodiazepine sourcing, and barriers to care.
